How to Use the Optibelt OPTIKRIK Gauge to Measure Static Strand Tension?

3 min read

Accurate V-belt tensioning prevents rotational slippage, excessive motor bearing wear, and premature drive failure. The Optibelt OPTIKRIK gauge provides a reliable mechanical method to measure static strand force in Newtons (N) without requiring electrical power or complex digital equipment.

Selecting the correct gauge model depends on the expected force range of your drive system.

OPTIKRIK Model

Measurement Force Range

Typical Belt Profiles

OPTIKRIK 0

70 N to 150 N

Small ribbed belts and light-duty V-belts

OPTIKRIK I

150 N to 600 N

Standard V-belts (AVX 10, AVX 13, SPZ, SPA)

OPTIKRIK II

500 N to 1,400 N

Heavy V-belts and Kraftbands (SPB, SPC, 8V)

OPTIKRIK III

1,300 N to 3,100 N

High-capacity industrial drives and multi-groove Kraftbands

Step-by-Step OPTIKRIK Measurement Procedure

Follow these sequential steps to obtain an accurate static strand tension reading on your belt drive.

  1. Safety Lockout and Drive Isolation:Mandatory safety check before touching drive components.

Turn off the drive motor completely. Apply standard Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures to isolate the power source, ensuring the drive cannot start unexpectedly during tension testing.

  1. Reset the Gauge Indicator Arm:Prepare the device for a new reading.

Push the black indicator arm all the way down into the body of the OPTIKRIK gauge. The top edge of the indicator arm must sit below the lowest mark on the numerical scale.

  1. Position the Gauge on the Belt Span:Ensure correct placement for accurate readings.

Place the flat bottom surface of the OPTIKRIK gauge against the top surface of a single belt strand. Position the rubber pressure pad directly in the middle of the span length between the two pulleys. Hold the gauge perpendicular to the belt width.

  1. Apply Deflection Pressure:Execute the single-finger pressure test.

Press down on the rubber pressure pad using a single finger. Increase downward pressure steadily until you feel and hear a distinct click or snap from the internal spring mechanism. Immediately release finger pressure from the pad.

  1. Read the Static Strand Force:Interpret the scale value accurately.

Carefully lift the OPTIKRIK gauge off the belt without touching or bumping the indicator arm. Locate the point where the top edge of the black indicator arm intersects the numerical scale printed on the body. This number represents the static strand force ($E_a$) in Newtons (N).

  1. Compare with Target Values and Adjust:Verify drive compliance and re-tension if needed.

Compare the measured static strand force against the target installation tension calculated for your specific drive parameters. If the reading is below target, adjust motor center distance or take-up position. Repeat steps 2 through 5 until the target tension range is achieved.

Essential Technical Tips for Accurate Readings

  • Always Measure Mid-Span: Position the pressure pad halfway between the driving and driven pulleys. Taking measurements too close to a pulley rim artificially increases resistance and yields incorrect high readings.

  • Inspect Multiple Strands: On multi-groove V-belt drives, test at least two or three individual strands across the pulleys to verify uniform load distribution.

  • Perform Run-In Re-Tensioning: Measure tension immediately after initial belt installation. Run the drive under full load for 0.5 to 4 hours, then re-check tension with the OPTIKRIK gauge to compensate for initial belt seating into pulley grooves.

  • Keep Gauges Clean: Ensure the sliding mechanism of the indicator arm remains free of grease, dust, and oil contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question: What unit of measurement is displayed on the OPTIKRIK scale?

Answer: The numerical scale printed on the Optibelt OPTIKRIK gauge body reads static strand force directly in Newtons (N).

Question: Can I use an OPTIKRIK gauge on timing belts?

Answer: No. OPTIKRIK mechanical gauges are designed specifically for friction drives such as standard V-belts, wedge belts, Kraftbands, and ribbed belts. For positive-fit timing belts, use the optibelt TT frequency tension tester.

Question: How frequently should belt tension be checked with the OPTIKRIK gauge?

Answer: Check tension immediately at installation, after 0.5 to 4 hours of run-in operation under load, and during routine preventative maintenance audits every 3 to 6 months.
